Cappadocia became independent of Greek rule in 280 BC, the last heir to the throne Ariarathes IX was unpopular and with the help of the Romans disposed of in 89 BC. The nobleman Ariobarzanes I was made king. During his long rule he was frequently at war with Tigranes of Armenia and several times defeated always to be returned to the throne by his friends the Romans. After several puppet rulers, Cappadocia became a province of Rome in 17 AD.
