History of Judea

Judea was a province under the Persians until Alexander the Great took over the area in 332 BC, then the Ptolomys, then the Seleukids. finally, with the weakening of the Seleukid empire in the 2nd century BC, the Jewish state gained autonomy. Alexander Jannaeus was the first king of the Hasmonaean dynasty to produce coinage.
