History of Olbia

A Milisian colony at a good trading position at the mouths of the Hypanis and Borysthenes rivers on the Northwest coast of the Black Sea. The city was one of the major grain suppliers of the ancient world and was a properous city in the 5th century BC with a very wealthy merchant class that had organized the city like one commercial enterprise. In 438/437 Perikles of Athens made an expedition to the city and it joined the Athenian Sea Union.
